Spoken World 2008 Archive

Good neighbours

From Thursday 11 September 2008 until Saturday 13 September 2008

In 2002 an international group of activists took the initiative of proclaiming 12th September, the day after 9/11, Interdependence Day. Since then the Interdependence Day Forum has become an annual event held somewhere in the world. Its source of inspiration is the American writer Professor Benjamin Barber, who is mainly known for his book Jihad vs McWorld (1995).

In 2008, and after Philadelphia, Rome, Paris, Casablanca and Mexico City, it is now Brussels' turn. The forum is a three-day international conference where academics, politicians, NGOs, artists, journalists and others will debate Solutions without Boundaries for Problems without Boundaries.

The sub-theme of the Brussels Forum is The City as Commons in a Divided World. Today more than half of the world population lives in large urban agglomerations. In these intercultural social laboratories we also encounter the problem of interdependence in a concentrated form. Their inhabitants make a stand against poor interdependence and unite to support good interdependence.

The Kaaitheater and Demos (Kunst & Democratie) will host the forum and in so doing will be working with a wide range of partners in Brussels: deBuren, Les Halles de Schaerbeek, Maison des Cultures/Huis van Culturen, Vaartkapoen, Foyer, Flagey, the City of Molenbeek and the European Commission.
