De Balie, Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 10, 1017 RR Amsterdam
The second Radio Book evening in De Balie is dedicated to Jan Lauwereyns and Jan van Aken. Both authors will read a Radio Book after which they will be interviewed by Annemiek Neefjes (NRC Handelsblad and De Standaard newpapers).
Jan van Aken (º1961) is a writer and teacher at the Schrijversvakschool [Writing School] in Amsterdam. Before he made his debut with the historical novel Het oog van de basilisk (2000) his work was published in the literary periodicals Optima and Nieuw Wereldtijdschrift. In the years that followed he published two very successful historical novels, De valse dageraad (2001) and De dwaas van Palmyra (2003). In 2005 he published Het fluwelen labyrint, which is set in more recent times: Amsterdam in the 80s. The story of his recently published Koning voor een dag dates back to pre-Christian Ionia where the legendary poet Hipponax lived.
Jan Lauwereyns (º1969) is a writer, poet and scientist. He works as a neuropsychologist in New Zealand and publishes scientific papers in such well-reputed periodicals as Nature and Neuron. He is not only a well-grounded scientist but also an acclaimed writer. Lauwereyns' first work to be published was Nagelaten sonnetten (1999), a collection that was nominated for the C. Buddingh' Prize. This was followed by Blanke verzen (2001) and Buigzaamheden (2002), for which he received the Hugues C. Pernath Prize. In 2003 Lauwereyns published his first, very successful, novel Monkey Business. The story is set in a laboratory in Japan where a western researcher carries out neurophysiological experiments on monkeys.
