Opening talk by Rik Torfs Archive
Tuesday 13 February 2007 - 20.00
deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels
deBuren has chosen the Church of St John the Baptist, in the Beguinage in the heart of Brussels, as a fitting venue for the opening talk of the series entitled Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The comeback of religion in the Low Countries. Although it has long been a tradition in the Netherlands for talks to be held in a church, it is relatively uncommon in Flanders. On this occasion deBuren has decided to allow a good Dutch custom to cross our borders.
Rik Torfs' talk in the Church of St John the Baptist will be the first in a series of talks on religion and faith. He will elucidate the comeback of religion in Western society and present his vision of the role of religion in our society.
Rik Torfs is professor of church law at Leuven University. He regularly publishes opinion pieces in the Flemish press and has a two-weekly column in De Standaard newspaper. In his articles, as well as on radio and television, he presents himself as an bright, critical commentator on religious affairs.
