Lecture in Dutch

deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels

On 25th September it will be precisely 500 years since King Philip the Good of Castille died unexpectedly in Burgos. It was mainly through his marriage to the Spanish princess who was usually known as Joanna the Mad, that this Habsburg lord of the Low Countries, who was born in Bruges, acquired the rights to the Spanish succession. Consequently, the intensive contacts between the Low Countries and Spain increased considerably and, by way of the empire of Charles V, finally resulted in the Dutch Revolt under Philip II.

Professor Raymond Fagel is a lecturer at the History Department of Leiden University and since 2003 has held a special chair in 'The Netherlands in the World' at Brussels University (VUB).

In collaboration with UPV-VUB. The lecture at deBuren is a synthesis of the preceding five lectures at the VUB
