Friday, Saterday, Sunday: Spreading the Word Archive
Tuesday 6 March 2007 - 20.00
deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels
Any series about the comeback of religion in the Low Countries should include an evening of preachers of the faith. Following secularisation and the breakdown of traditional religious and socio-political barriers, they play an important role in an open and changing society.
The theologian, television host and columnist Jacobine Geel and the imam and teacher Abdulwahid van Bommel, who converted to Islam, navigate the waves of religious revival and reveal to us at deBuren precisely what it is that constitutes the power of their particular faith.
Geert Lernout, who teaches comparative literature at Antwerp University and whose book, Als God spreekt, was published this year, is at present working on a study of the book of Genesis. He will represent the voices of those who do not adhere to any one faith. For many people, religiosity has acquired a new function over the past few decades, ranging from imperative and disciplinary to questioning and guiding. Each of these three gifted and charismatic speakers will for half an hour act as your beacon on the waves.
