Forgotten wars Archive
Thursday 9 November 2006 - 20.00
deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels
How much news did you hear this year from Chechnya, Nepal, North Uganda, Colombia and other largely igno-red far-flung corners of the globe?
Lately, the world's eye has been mainly turned towards Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine, and most recently on Sudan too. The current conflict in Sudan has already cost the lives of tens of thousands of people, but the public seems to have forgotten that hundreds of thousands have already been killed by acts of war in this African country in the space of just one generation. In recent history, more than three million were killed by force of arms or the consequences of war in the Congolese region. It is cause for concern that the world still spends more money on preparing for new wars than on ending forgotten wars.
A debate featuring Gareth Evans, director of the International Crisis Group, and Joris Luyendijk, author and ex-correspondent in the Middle-East. Moderator is Kristof Clerix, journalist for MO* magazine.
