Dick Matena: 'Kort Amerikaans' and 'De Avonden' Archive
From Thursday 2 March 2006 until Wednesday 19 April 2006
deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussel
His version of Gerard Reve's De Avonden has proved very successful. With great sophistication, professional skill and respect for the writer, Dick Matena turns this classic of Dutch literature into a striking strip cartoon. The publishing house "De Bezige Bij" will soon be publishing new work of his. This time Dick Matena"s inspiration was Kort Amerikaans, Jan Wolker’s first novel, published in 1962. Here too he uses the full text and captures it in powerful images with a great sense of realism. A new element is the use of colours, war colours, which the artist describes as 'flat, earthy colours’.
Original drawings from De Avonden and Kort Amerikaans will be exhibited at deBuren for the first time. This is strip cartoon in its purest form. Literature to look at.
Even though his work is innovative, Dick Matena is hardly a newcomer to the field. He started work at Toonder Studios in 1960 and over the years has received many nominations and awards for his work, such as the Bronze Adhemar in 2003. His work has been published in more than 13 languages.
