The books

Tuesday 26 February 2008 - 20.00 > 21.30

deBuren, Leopoldstraat 6, 1000 Brussels

On the occasion of the presentation of his book, De geschiedenis van de wereld van morgen (The History of Tomorrow's World), Rik Coolsaet will talk to Prof. Laurens-Jan Brinkhorst, D66 politician and professor of international and European law and management in Leiden. The moderator is Jorn De Cock (De Standaard newspaper).

Prof. Rik Coolsaet is professor of international relations at Ghent University and the director of the 'Safety & Global Governance' programme at the Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations in Brussels.

Anyone who thinks that the age in which he lives is unique in every way, is mistaken. These are Rik Coolsaet's words in the introduction to his new book, De geschiedenis van de wereld van morgen. He says we increasingly measure what we experience by our own experience or at least by that of the generation immediately preceding our own. Historical knowledge is not something that comes naturally. Moreover, the media inundate us with far too much information for us to digest or even interpret. Nevertheless, Coolsaet believes that there is far less news under the sun than we are inclined to believe. His aim with this book therefore is 'to dig up forgotten historical events that will help us to explain what is happening today and may happen tomorrow'.
